These flutes are very special, extremely beautiful, and incredibly powerful... The "Musician's" flute is hand carved and finished by master flutemaker Ward Stroud. Each "Stroud" flute undergoes many, many hours of loving craftsmanship. These as well as all "Stroud" flutes are hand made and NOT mass produced, but instead individually, and spiritually crafted... The "Totem" (wooden piece that is tied on top of the flute, normally but not always carved in the likeness of an animal) choices are --Eagle, Wolf, Whale, Horse, Bear, Dolphin, Frog, Warrior, Cougar... or if you have another "Totem" in mind we can arrange a custom "Totem" for your flute. The "Totem" or "Spirit Animal" that adorns the flute is a beautiful wood sculpture that takes great effort to create. It is important to note that these "Totems" are not just decorations but signify a connection with the spirit of the that image. As with all "Stroud" flutes each one is made in a beautiful/spiritual way, Each Musician's flute is painstakingly "Tuned" (*please read message "about tuning" below) with an electronic tuner to perfect pitch or "Concert" quality (great if you want to play along with recordings or other musician's/instruments!) and of course beautifully polished/finished to protect and enhance the woods natural grain. Collector's Edition

The "Collectors" flute is a very unusual Native American Style flute... Ward has only made a small number of these flutes as they require an extraordinary amount of time (about a month) and effort. Each one is a detailed and meticulous carved work of art. We believe that no other flute maker in this country puts as much time or energy into making a flute such as the "Collectors" flute. Unlike the other "Stroud" flutes the "Totem" is not a carved/sculpted figure attached to the top of the flute but instead the flute itself is one big sculpted "Totem". The "Collectors" flute is made with wood is that is gathered honorably, and (as with all our flutes) frequently smudged (cleansed) with sacred sage. Songs are sung, and prayers given over EACH and EVERY flute as it is being made/born... of course each is painstakingly "Tuned" (*please read message "about tuning" below) with an electronic tuner to perfect pitch or "Concert" quality (great if you want to play along with recordings or other musician's/instruments!). Each flute is signed, sequentially numbered and dated by the artist/flutemaker Ward Stroud personally... making them collectors items. Due to the work involved, and time constraints of the artist, only two (2) of these flutes are made each year (sometimes only 1).

The "Spirit" Flute
Perfect for smaller hands! Only 4 holes makes it the easiest flute to play! Great for Children as well as adults!

With permission from respected flute maker Nev Autrey it is my great honor to offer to you this amazing little flute! It small size (approx 13 inches) and enchanting voice make it a classic and a must for flute players/collectors everywhere! Another wonderful characteristic of the "Spirit" flute is that it has only 4 holes! It is so easy to play and make great music that it is a natural for young people (the holes are close together and fit small hands) and for handicapped people who can't finger a five or six hole flute (spirit flute can be played "one" handed). As with all our flutes the "Spirit" flute is lovingly handcrafted and tuned to "key", A-440 standard, allowing you to play along with other instruments as well as lots of other benefits. Each is "signed", "numbered", and "dated", as with our more expensive collector/musician flutes! These magical flutes are made from incense cedar and are available with either an "Eagle" or "Wolf" Totem.

A note about Keys...
... Keep in mind that the lower the key of the flute the farther the playing holes are from each other, this is just a dynamic of the way flutes work... it takes a pretty good sized hand to play a flute lower than an E (one above middle C). The key/pitch of G or F# (one above middle C) is about mid range (not to high, not to low) and are our most popular keys due to the playing holes being close to one another and fitting almost any ones reach comfortably.

About Tuning or "Tuned" Flutes/Keys

There are two definitions of tuning that we will discuss here...

One

The relationship of each note that a flute plays in relation to every other note on that flute... this is called "inter tuning"

The scale that the NA flute is normally tuned to is called a "Pentatonic" or 5 note scale... it is comprised of 5 sacred and harmonious notes (although a full Do, Re, Me, type scale can be played using different fingering) that can be played in any configuration, and no matter what order the notes are played in, every note the player blows will be without a "sharp", "flat", or disharmonious sounds... every note works TOGETHER (see free brochure "How to Play the Native American Flute") It's MAGICAL! If a flute's holes or "note's" are not perfectly tuned to each other the whole balance of the flute is thrown off and the 5 sacred notes no longer will musically "match up" resulting in a disharmonic effect when played together... Of course a flute tuned/balanced perfectly will practically play itself, and is a thing of great beauty...

Two

Refers to the "Key" or "Pitch" that a flute is tuned to relative to other instruments... if a flute and a guitar can both play in the key of G harmoniously for example...

There is a standard in music called A 440 which simply is a way for all instruments/musician's to "match up" or be in the same "pitch". If you close all the holes on your flute and blow you get a "tonic" or "fundamental" note (the lowest note/sound the flute will make). This "tonic" note is the pitch or key that your flute is tuned to. If you used a electronic tuner and took a reading of the "tonic" note of your flute it would tell you what key your flute is in. Why is it important to have a flute that is tuned to a specific "Key"? Lets say you have a flute that is not tuned A 440 standard and is not in a specific key and you have a favorite recording of flute music that you want to play along with. Your flute sounds beautiful when you play it by yourself but when you play your flute along with the recording the sound is unpleasant. This is because your flute is not tuned properly, or not tuned to the "key" that the musician on the recording is using. Musical notes are based on mathematical measurements or "cycles" called hertz. There are certain "cycles" that "match up" and produce harmonious sounds and other "cycles" that can cause unpleasant when played together. A properly tuned flute is one way to ensure that the "cycles" or notes are in balance with each other. What if you don't plan on playing with other people or along with recordings? then as long as each note on your flute is stunned within itself (see above point one) it shouldn't matter, but with so many good flutes available at reasonable price why not have the options... or "Standing People" (Trees) who are a living/loving/breathing part of our "Mother Earth" and should be "honored" as sacred.
All flutes are Sung to, Prayed over, and Smudged with Sage (*cleansed ) frequently while being made.
I hope one day all of mankind will know the gentle sound of the Native American Style Flute
